Modern, industrial Life Support Systems (LSS) room for AquaSpace Huntsville aquarium. This facility is the functional “heart” behind major exhibits.

LSS = Life Support Systems
telemetry data will be fed by sensors into a centralized system and available through the infotainment private web. Behind the scenes tours will include some of the LSS areas.

Types of info available on the LSS Telemetry

  1. temperature
  2. pH
  3. Nitrates
  4. Salinity in PPT
  5. ORP
  6. Lighting and PAR levels
  7. Pump and Filtration data – models, GPH, qty, overall turnover.

  1. Massive Sand Filtration Bank: Large-diameter sand filters are lined up against the back wall, connected by heavy-duty PVC piping. These provide essential mechanical filtration.
  2. Protein Skimmer Banks: Multiple tall acrylic skimmer columns are arranged in a bank, designed to remove organic compounds before they break down.
  3. Bank of Pumps: Powerful centrifugal pumps, mounted on raised concrete plinths, drive the high-volume water circulation required for a massive reef tank.
  4. Central Control Station with LSS Screens: A main operations console features multiple touchscreens. These screens (labeled “OVERALL LSS STATUS” and “SENSOR DIAGNOSTICS”) display real-time sensor data and a system flow diagram.
  5. Sensors and Instrumentation: Various probes and flow meters are integrated into the piping, feeding data like pH, Salinity (35.1 ppt), ORP (420 mV), and Temperature (26.5 C) directly to the control screens. The system monitors ‘Sand Filter Differential Pressure’ to automate backwashing.
  6. Connection to the Display: A large window looks directly into the ’20’ DIAMETER CARIBBEAN CYLINDER REEF TANK’, showing the illuminated exhibit and reminding staff of the vital function they support.
